After installing the most recent AGP drivers for my motherboard chipset (which is a very important thing, mind you), I ran both tests on all three cards at 1280x1024 at 75Hz refresh in single monitor mode and then in dual monitor mode—the primary is an analog 19” CRT and the secondary is a digital 18” LCD, with Maya expanded to only the primary display. I compiled my results over a six-week trial. I found the results more than interesting and somewhat more surprising than finding Cate Blanchett making a cheese wheel in my kitchen wearing spiked heels and a straw hat, though I would hardly complain (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0120824). As a matter of fact, I think it’s about time this happened. I never get my whey. [Sic]
Well anyway, all the tests were done on the same computer, with no hardware or software changes between tests. The test platform is an Intel Pentium 4 2.53GHz on a Soyo P4S 645DX Fire Dragon Ultra motherboard with 1.5GB of Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM running at a CAS of 3. The OS was Windows 2000Pro with Service Pack 2, running with what I figured to be everyday background applications people would have at home: Norton AntiVirus 2002 and Belkin’s UPS monitoring software. The FireGL 8800 used ATI’s 3035 drivers and the Nvidias both used Nvidia’s 29.17 Quadro 4 drivers.

Keep in mind that these benchmarks also tax the CPU resources, and not solely the video card. But since all of them were performed on the same system, it’s not an issue. Furthermore, it means that these results are more important in their relativity with each other, since they are yielding very accurate relative results. I ran each benchmark more than once (typically three times, sometimes over the course of a few days) and used the average of the results, though the results never really differed much between test runs on the same card.
